Artist Statement

At the core of my work lies the human psyche. It is fragile. It is resilient. It is strong. The search for meaning, feelings and psychological states is closely interwoven with both the images and the text. Sometimes the image speaks for itself; at other times, I wander and search until renewal, weathering or inner strength reveal themselves in the structure of a material.

My macro photography focuses on overlooked or underestimated details, such as cracks in glass, rust on metal and the grain of wood, and reveals something larger than the material itself. I see environment and political influence as inseparable from our sense of self. Works such as ‘Breeding’, ‘Society’, and ‘Individualism’ engage with these outside forces that shape and challenge the individual.

Another central theme in my work is its connection to history and mythology — to the parts of ourselves that are rooted in the past, in symbols, morals and fables. All these themes come together to form a larger whole, which I try to discover through my photography: ourselves — as individuals, as a group, and as humankind.
